Over the years Michael Fiedler has taught marching band, orchestra, jazz, choir, guitar, physical education, music history, and music theory for the San Diego Unified School District. His work with SDUSD began in 2010, and prior to that he worked as a touring musician, teacher, actor, and theatrical director in his hometown of Detroit Michigan (where he earned both of his undergraduate degrees - in Theatre and in Music Education). Mr Fiedler's graduate degree is from the University of Florida and his thesis project was writing curriculum on Marching Band as a Physical Education course.

Mr. Fiedler has spent his entire career teaching high school students, but has sometimes paired his high school teaching with classes taught at the elementary school, middle school, and university levels as well.
He currently mentors prospective music teachers through UCSD's teacher induction program and has hosted student teachers at CHHS for SDSU's teacher credentialing program.  Mr Fiedler has been at CHHS since 2018. Prior to his time at CHHS Mr Fiedler spend 8 years teaching at La Jolla High School. 

On a district level, Mr Fiedler currently sits on the SDUSD VAPA Advisory Council and SDUSD's SHEAC. He has managed the SDUSD High School Honor String Orchestra since 2020 and the SDUSD Honor Vocal Jazz Ensemble since 2025.

In 2014, Mr Fiedler was honored as an NBC channel 7 "Inspirational Teacher", in 2018 he received an inaugural SDUSD Spotlight Award for Creative Leadership,  in 2021 he was honored as SDUSD's "Outstanding High School Instrumental Music Educator" with the Schuchman Award, in 2024 Mr Fiedler served as conductor for the SDUSD Debut (Elementary) Honor Orchestra, and in 2025 he accepted a second SDUSD Spotlight Award - this time  for Creative Community Engagement .
Mr Fiedler's SDUSD music students have studied music culture with him and performed under his direction in places as far flung as Seattle, New York City, Puerto Rico, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New Orleans. 

Mr Fiedler lives in San Diego with his brilliant wife Emily and his charismatic children Felix and Freddie. In his time outside Canyon Hills, Mr Fiedler likes to travel (favorite destinations: Paris and Mexico City), read (mostly history, biology, and fiction), write music, play ice hockey, and explore beautiful San Diego (favorite place in the city: Balboa Park).
